York, cont.

Today we went to Mass at York Minster and then headed out to Fountains Abbey. Established in 1132, this abbey was once one of the largest in England. At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540, the site was sold to a noble family who constructed a great house and elaborate gardens while the abbey buildings fell to ruin. We then returned to York where the students had time to get dinner and explore the city some more.
